Stephen Lewis Foundation in Canada - Grandmothers to Grandmothers
Daphne Hales will speak about the Grandmothers-to-Grandmothers campaign begun by the Stephen Lewis Foundation in Canada in 2006, when Canadian grandmothers pledged to help African grandmothers raising grandchildren in families decimated by HIV/AIDS. Through personal contacts, grandmother groups have also sprung up in the UK and Australia. As a grandmother herself, Daphne was shocked when she heard of the plight of the African grannies, and in 2012, she joined the fund-raising efforts of the West Van “Gogos” - an African word for grandmother. She is the co-chair of this small group.
