After probably too many years in a comfortable office Angela Steininger decided that retirement gave her an opportunity to look at some areas and aspects of Arctic Canada. She also made a comparison trip to Greenland. Thus between 2002 and 2023 Angela and her husband, Manfred, made seven northern trips mostly in summer but once in winter. Sometimes these were guided backpacking trips but mostly they went on their own to see what they could see.
They saw stunning views and a very different way of life to that which they were accustomed to in southern Canada. Angela will share with us some photos of stunning scenery and her observations on the unusual lives of some of the people they met in these remote areas. Places that are in the news and may play an important role in the future of Canada but most of us are unlikely to see for ourselves.
Angela worked at IBM for 30 years after which she was let out for good behaviour. Her responsibilities at IBM included technical, marketing management and sales positions. Retirement opened a new world for her in volunteering at SFU, advisory work at St Paul’s and through the Elizabeth Fry Society working with male and female inmates.
Angela’s grandmotherly duties keep her busy but in the summer she finds plenty of time to go kayaking, mixed in with some stand-up-paddle boarding, sailing and hiking. In the winter the slopes of Whistler see her skiing. In the past she has enjoyed travelling off the beaten track and away from the comforts of home.
