Hi everyone! I hope your first week of 2025 has been just great.
Some of you will have heard, by now, that my week has had its ups and downs. Since news gets around and everyone will know everything by Sunday, I might as well give a quick update. You may have caught the news that on Tuesday I made a trip to the Lions Gate Hospital emergency room. Please don’t be anxious! Turns out I had a little bout with kidney stones—unpleasant, but ultimately not serious. As they say, this too will pass!
I am a little behind on things, though, so I will keep this short. If you’re reading ahead for Sunday’s message, we’re back into 1 Corinthians. This week we get to explore one of those odd and awkward passages that doesn’t get preached often: 1 Corinthians 7.
We’ll look over the whole chapter, so I’d encourage you to read the whole thing through if you have time. Actually, it might even be useful to start in 1 Corinthians 6:12 to establish some sense of the context. Chapter 7 launches a new subject and a new section of the book (shifting from corrections to questions), but it builds on some of the themes around holiness, sexuality, and the body which Paul has talked about in Chapter 6. Also, if you’ve got the time and you’re really wanting to be diligent, I recommend looking at the chapter in a couple of translations, because there will be some translation issues to discuss.
It's not an easy passage, but hopefully it will be a fruitful study. I look forward to digging into the Word with you again this week.
Oh, and I’m thinking this might be a great time to have another short informal Q&A after the service if there are people who’d like to spend some time talking about 1 Corinthians or other topics from recent weeks. I’ll make myself available, assuming I’m feeling back to normal!
Meanwhile, have a wonderful week. Blessings!
