James Emery White writes ‘To be filled with the Holy Spirit means that we allow him to occupy and control every area of our lives…How much of you does the Holy Spirit have? When teaching this to my seminary students, I bring two glasses of water and two packets of Alka-Seltzer to class. I drop a packet of Alka-Seltzer, with the wrapper on, into one glass. Then I plop an unsealed packet into the second glass and watch it fill with fizz.
I say to my students, "Both glasses have the Alka-Seltzer, just as all Christians have the Holy Spirit. But notice how you can have the Holy Spirit and not his filling." Our goal is to live in such a way as to unwrap the packaging around the presence and power of the Holy Spirit within us.’
Bob Bahr will be speaking on the Holy Spirit this Sunday. You may wish to read Ephesians 5:1-21 in advance.
Nils Karlstrom memorial service: the service will take place at the church at 2.00 p.m. today, with Bob Bahr officiating. Parking will be available in the upper lot and on the grass field.
Fall BBQ, September 11: we are looking forward to having our Fall BBQ on September 11 after the service, and all will be welcome. Many thanks to those who have offered to volunteer their services.
Church positions: The Nominating Committee submits recommendations to the church for the positions of Council, Nominating Committee, Moderator, Church Clerk, and Treasurer. We are currently looking for suggestions about people who could take the positions of Moderator, Treasurer, and Council starting in 2023. In advance of those recommendations, we welcome input from the membership. Forms will be available in the foyer after the service: if you have a recommendation, please submit the form to Mary Roberts in the foyer after this Sunday’s service.
In-service donations: it has come to our attention that a few people would like to return to the “Pre-paid” donation card to put in the offering plate - meaning they have donated, but with a different option such as Pre-Authorized Deposit, the credit card on our website or by e-transfer. While we understand the reason for this card, only a few used it in the past. Therefore we will not be re-introducing this practice.
Mark your calendars for these great events coming up.
